I have worked in IT systems since 1974 (nuclear reactor design). Then I worked in medical informatics and statistics (including at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Equine Research Station) until 1980.
From 1980 to 1984 I worked at the CEGB (Central Electricity Generating Board) where I devised the national training plan for control and instrumentation professionals.
From 1984 to the end of the 80s, I was involved in international consultancy particularly with Yourdon (first Yourdon Europe and then in the US), latterly as one of the 3 main developers of YSM. I was the editor of the Yourdon Reference Manual.
After leaving Yourdon (when it was taken over and 'method development' ceased) I joined Keele University's Computer Science department until taking early retirement when the department was restructured. During that time, I mostly taught 'systems' at postgraduate level (MSc, MBA), but was also the University's liason for external IT projects. I helped develop tools for the detection of student plagiarism and was involved in training of lecturers at overseas delivery centres.
