Tim has over 30 years’ experience in the Legal IT sector. During this time, he has built and lead development teams, designed software, and founded and run companies.

He has a wealth of experience in Software from design, through building and even in marketing and selling. Combining a deep technical understanding with vision and strategy Tim has been able to bring innovative software to market multiple times.

Along with the technical aspects of a software company, Tim has a deep understanding of what it takes to build, lead and coach high-performing teams.

Until 2009, he was responsible for the design and development of all the Windows-based AlphaLAW Solicitors’ system. His software was used by in excess of 1,000 firms, winning numerous awards and accolades from both industry bodies and users alike.

Establishing that there was a need for a Legal Software supplier to provide an entirely new legal software product combined with unparalleled support, he founded Insight Legal in 2011.
As Founder and CEO at Insight Legal, Tim uses his expertise and customer-focused ethic to bring high quality but affordable software to law firms, helping customers to achieve compliance, efficient business management and streamlined processes.

In 2023, the Insight Legal Software company was successfully sold to Dye & Durham Corporation.
Tim now concentrates on helping companies with a variety of challenges both inside and outside of the Legal Software sector.

From consulting and advising on company integrations and transformations, to getting hands-on with data migrations, Tim’s breadth of skills allow him to provide many types of organisations with a single point of contact for complex projects.

    Insight Legal Software launched in 2011. We are dedicated to the design, development, supply and support of Legal Accounts, Practice Management and Case Management products to Solicitor firms in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Insight Legal was founded by Tim Smith, former Technical Director at AlphaLAW. Tim was responsible for the design and development of all the Windows-based AlphaLAW Solicitors' systems until 2009, with his software being used by in excess of 1,000 firms and winning numerous awards and accolades from industry bodies and users alike. Deborah Edwards joined as Professional Services Director in 2012. Deborah is a former legal cashier with experience of accounts and practice management in both small and large Solicitors firms. Brian Welsh joined the board of Insight Legal in 2012 and has gone on to become Chairman. Brian has a wealth of experience of working with Law Firms of all sizes and brings a track record of successful business management to Insight Legal Software. Within the team, we have over 100 years' experience of working with and for law firms, which gives us an unparalleled knowledge of how practices operate and what they need.
